The Difference Between Sativa, Indica and Hybrids

Cannabis is an extremely interesting substance for a variety of reasons. One of the most perplexing is the fact that it comes in many different strains, yet stems from three general types. The types are sativa, indica, and hybrids, which is a mixture of the two. These types of marijuana have different side effects, and your high will be affected depending on which you smoke/consume.

Sativa, often described as a mind high, is usually the most uplifting type of the three. Users say that they can get a bolt of creative energy from smoking it. It also has traits that include relieving headaches, reducing nausea and stimulating thoughts. What makes this type so different from indica strains is the THC content. Sativa marijuana is mainly composed of THC, though it also contains CBD and CBN to a much lesser degree. These chemicals are responsible for the sensation of being high, though they have differing side effects from one another. Sativa strains are recommended for creative people, or those who are looking for an inspiring and euphoric experience. Some common sativa strains are Sour Diesel, Lemon Haze, and Strawberry Cough.

Diesel strains are named after their strong smell, which resembles — you guessed it — diesel gas. These strains are very energizing and euphoric when smoked, and have been said to fade the effects of stress, pain and depression. If you’re smoking Sour Diesel, expect to feel happy, relaxed and uplifted. Some negative effects are dry mouths and eyes.

The Lemon Haze strain is a strong sativa, averaging at about 15-20% THC content. It’s said to have notes of lemon peel in its taste and smell. Like other sativa strains, users can expect to feel happy, energized and relaxed. It’s also closely related to strains Lemon Skunk and Silver Haze, a hybrid and sativa.

Strawberry Cough is another great strain for euphoria and stress-relief. This strain has strawberry and sweet berry aromas that are perfect for making you feel giddy with your buzz.

Indica cannabis is quite the opposite from sativa. While indica cannabis is still going to produce a positive experience, it’s described as a body high. Because of this, indica is recommended to smoke for natural pain relief. It’s likely to make the user more tired and drowsy, whilst relieving stress and anxiety. If you smoke indica, you’re more likely to want to sit back and relax than work on any projects. Indica has a higher CBD content than THC, though its CBN content remains the lowest.

Indica-dominant strains are usually smoked at night, and can help the user have a wonderful night’s rest. Some popular indica strains are Purple Kush, Death Star, and Blueberry. Fruity flavors are quite common with this type of marijuana.

Purple Kush, one of the more popular strains, is a strong indica with earthy tones to it. It’s given its name because of the stunning purple shade it has during growth. This strain is said to give users a euphoric, relaxed and sleepy feeling. In addition to this, Purple Kush helps defeat insomnia and stress, and is a great pain reliever.

Death Star is a great indica strain that actually originates from both an indica and sativa. Sensi Star and Sour Deisel came together to produce this fantastic indica strain that produces extreme relaxation. It also has great medical uses, with users reporting reduced pain, stress, insomnia and more.

The Blueberry strain has won awards for its strong euphoric effects. It actually stems from Afghani (indica), Thai (sativa) and Purple Thai (sativa) and has notes of strong blueberry and some other sweet berries. Relaxation is key in this long-lasting strain, but users also make note of the stress-relieving capabilities.

Finally, as the name suggests, hybrids are a combination of sativa and indica types. There are sativa-dominant and indica-dominant strains, so using your knowledge on either strain can help you decide what you’re going to smoke depending on your mood and preferences. Hybrids are a great experience that every smoker should try at least once. Popular hybrid strains include Pineapple Express, Cheese, and Trainwreck.

Pineapple Express was a strain that blew up once a comedy of the same name was released in 2008. Developed from strains Trainwreck and Hawaiian, this sativa-dominant strain is strong and long-lasting. Users are to expect a happy and energetic sensation, as well as strong stress-relief. This strain is a treat to smoke, as it smells of pineapple, mango and other sweet fruits.

Noted above, Trainwreck is another hybrid strain that went into making Pineapple Express. Creativity is key in this strain, as users report that among euphoria and happiness. The medical effects of this strain are wonderful, with users experiencing less anxiety, pain, depression and fatigue. Trainwreck comes from a long line of sativas Mexican and Thai, along with indica Afghani.

Cheese is another fantastic hybrid that is closely related to Skunk #1 as well as other cheese strains, like Blue Cheese and Cheesus. Unlike Trainwreck and Pineapple Express, this hybrid is indica-dominant and excels at relaxation. Users are likely to be hungry, happy and stress-free when smoking Cheese. The aroma is pungent and earthy, but ideal for those in pain.
